Podcast Shownotes

Have you ever eaten one biscuit, chocolate or takeaway meal and immediately thought, “Well, I’ve ruined it now, so I may as well start again on Monday”?

I know this mindset all too well because I used to live in it.

For nearly two decades, I was stuck in the cycle of dieting, restricting, feeling guilty, overeating and then starting over again. And what I eventually realised was that my biggest problem wasn't that I didn't know what to eat.

It was the way I was thinking about food.

In this episode of The Healthy Diary Podcast, I'm talking about one of the biggest mindset blocks I see keeping women stuck with their weight loss: all-or-nothing thinking.

Because one meal doesn't make or break your progress. What matters is what you do next.

In this episode, I share:

  • What all-or-nothing thinking actually looks like and why so many of us fall into it after years of dieting

  • Why one biscuit, takeaway meal or unstructured weekend doesn't mean you've “blown it”

  • How the “I’ll start again Monday” mentality can turn one less-than-perfect meal into days or weeks of overeating

  • Why naturally lean women don't panic after overeating or feel the need to compensate

  • How to stop labelling foods as “good” or “bad” and instead focus on adding nourishment

  • Why your next meal is always another opportunity to look after yourself

  • The mindset shift that helped me stop compensating after overeating

  • Why consistency will always beat perfection when it comes to sustainable weight loss

  • How to recover from setbacks quickly instead of allowing one meal to derail your entire week

My 3 strategies for breaking the all-or-nothing cycle

1. Stop waiting for Monday.

Your next opportunity isn't tomorrow, Monday or after the holidays.

It's your next meal.

If lunch didn't go according to plan, that's okay. I don't want you waiting until tomorrow to “be good” again. Simply make your next meal balanced and nourishing and keep moving forward.

2. Stop calling food “good” or “bad”.

When we label chocolate or biscuits as “bad”, we can start believing that we're bad when we eat them.

Instead, I want you to ask yourself:

“How can I make this meal more nourishing?”

We're not taking foods away. We're adding nourishment. That's a completely different mindset.

3. Stop chasing perfection.

I used to believe that successful people were disciplined because they never slipped up.

Now I know that's not true.

Successful people simply recover faster.

They don't allow one meal to become one week. They don't punish themselves, skip meals or spend hours exercising to compensate. They simply get back to their normal routine.

That's the mindset I now use in my own life, and it's one I teach my clients too.

The biggest takeaway

You don't need to be perfect to lose weight.

You don't need a perfect meal plan, a perfect week or a perfect diet.

You need to keep showing up.

Because lasting weight loss isn't built through perfection. It's built through consistency.

And consistency is simply getting back on track again and again and again.

So the next time you catch yourself thinking, “I've blown it,” pause, take a breath and remind yourself:

One meal doesn't define my progress.

Then focus on your next decision.

That's where the magic happens.
